Teaneraki Cottage was originally the Teaneraki Hotel, the local pub.
Built in 1876 the Teaneraki Hotel was located on Weston-Ngapara Rd, next to where the Enfield Hall is today. When North Otago introduced prohibition in 1905, the hotel lost its liquor license.
The hotel operated as a boarding house for a few years, then in the 1920’s the building was cut in half, and the half that became Teaneraki Cottage was transported by bullock cart up the hill to its present location at 39 Wellington St, where it was rebuilt into a small family home.
During the late 1970’s the cottage was extensively renovated, and the gardens established.
The gardens became a local tourist attraction with busloads of visitors coming to see them. In 1997 Teaneraki Cottage gardens featured in New Zealand House and Garden magazine.
We purchased Teaneraki Cottage in 2011. It was our home for 12 years until we moved into our newly built Passive House located on the hill behind the cottage.
